Why careful website sitemap planning is vital to ensure your site is effective and easy to navigate.

A sitemap is a diagrammatic plan of the organisation of your website, showing each page the site will contain, how the pages inter-relate, and how the navigation is arranged.

It is the startpoint for both the content writing and the build of the website by your developers.

As an experienced website content writer, with a strong marketing background, I bring a commercial insight to the development of sitemaps that the majority of web developers alone cannot.

If you already have your sitemap

If you bring your website project to me with the  structure of the site already planned out (perhaps by you and your web developers), there may be no need for me to do further work on this.

Frequently, however, clients who do already have a sitemap will ask me to review it and to suggest adjustments which will make the site easier to navigate, or allow the content to be more logically deployed.

And if you do not

If no sitemap exists when you bring your project to me, I will develop this for you and present it in a format similar to those from previous projects which you can see here.

We will then iterate this together until we are satisfied that we have a sitemap for which we can begin work on scoping the content of the individual pages.

Here's how I help when I work on your sitemap

  • Strategic structure: The sitemap is shaped around business goals, user journeys and messaging priorities, not developer convenience.
  • Audience-led navigation: It’s built around the information and features that different audiences need to find and understand and  the actions you need them to take.
  • Coherent content flow: Pages are organised to support a persuasive narrative, not a set of isolated topics.
  • No buried pages: I spot where important content risks being hidden, duplicated, or disconnected.
  • SEO built in: Search intent and keyword priorities are considered from the start, not bolted on afterwards.
  • Less rework later: A well-judged sitemap reduces content gaps, rewrites and navigation confusion once the build is underway.
