Running an SME or owner-led business and need an experienced copywriter?
The majority of the projects I work on are for SME and owner-managed businesses.
Typically, these are organisations employing anywhere from a handful of people up to around fifty, often with a founder, director or small leadership team still closely involved in decisions.
If that’s you, and you need help with copywriting, website content, messaging, thought leadership, or making sense of a marketing challenge that’s become muddled, I’ll be able to help.
Many clients arrive with a single, practical requirement.
We usually work out what else might be needed as we go.
Will I understand about your business?
I will. I won’t be an expert, in the way that you are, but I am an extremely experienced copywriter. I’ve worked with hundreds and hundreds of client companies in just about every industry and profession.
So I will understand your sector.
And when you explain to me about where you are positioned within the sector, and how your model works, I’ll understand these, too.
Will I be able to work with a specific member of your team?
I’m used to working in whatever way makes most sense for your situation.
That may mean working directly with:
the business owner or founder
a Managing Director or CEO
a marketing manager, if you have one
an EA or PA who has been asked to oversee a project
designers or web developers, either in-house or external
I’m comfortable collaborating with different roles and carrying decisions through properly, rather than leaving things half-finished or ambiguous.
Will I be able to write in your brand tone of voice?
Yes.
I don’t impose a single “house style” across all clients. I shape tone and language to suit the organisation, audience and context.
If you already have brand or tone-of-voice guidelines, I’ll work within them.
If you don’t, I’ll help establish something appropriate and usable.
Either way, the writing will sound like you, not like me.
Can I help you sort out your website - maybe even help you manage your developers? Websites, developers and content planning.
Of course.
Many SME and owner-led businesses come to me after realising that jumping straight into design or development has created problems.
Content structure, messaging and purpose need to be worked out before anything is built.
This is something I do every day.
Depending on what you need, I can:
shape or refine a sitemap and content structure
plan what each page needs to achieve
write the content itself
liaise directly with designers or developers
offer clear, practical guidance on SEO and content priorities
In some cases, if it genuinely helps, I will even manage the content side of a build on your behalf.
Can I help with your blog ongoing?
I’m happy to discuss blog or ongoing content work, but only where it has a clear purpose.
If you’re looking for someone to publish filler content on a schedule so you don’t have to think about it, I’m probably not the right fit.
If, however, your content plays a real role in credibility, visibility or commercial outcomes, and you’re prepared to treat it seriously, then it can work very well.
Will I cost 'big business' money?
No.
I quote each project based on its actual scope and complexity.
I’m not competing with inexperienced writers who charge little because they know little.
But I’m also very realistic about the budgets and pressures SME and owner-led businesses operate under.
Fees are set sensibly, and proportionately, in the same way you would expect from any other professional advisor you trust.
How I tend to work
If there’s one defining feature of this kind of work, it’s flexibility.
Some clients arrive with a clearly defined brief.
Others arrive with a problem they can’t quite articulate yet.
Both are fine.
We clarify what’s needed, decide what matters most, and let the work take shape from there.
Get in touch.
I enjoy working with SME and owner-led businesses.
The short lines of communication, the speed of decision-making, and the ability to make a real difference are exactly what suit the way I work.
If you think I might be able to help, get in touch and we’ll talk it through.
