Banker Craig Middleton joins HBS as Sales Manager
Craig Middleton, a highly experienced financial services professional who spent more than three decades in Private Banking with NatWest and then Coutts, has joined the Harpenden in the role of Sales Manager.
Craig joined HBS in April to lead our team of Business Development Managers, further developing our offer to the Broker community and its clients.
“My focus is on developing the lending proposition for the Society”, Craig explains. “The Harpenden has strong aspirations to achieve growth, in a balanced and sustainable fashion consistent with the approach which has served it so well for more than 60 years. Our strength is our ability to work within the complex prime residential sector, serving high net worth individuals whose circumstances can be intricate and multifaceted. The Harpenden has amassed the experience to help those individuals and families achieve their objectives by underwriting their propositions on an individual basis. My aim is to build on this, working with our brokers and BDMs, as well as with our Management team on further development of our product.”
Customer relationship and business development expertise.
After more than 20 years with NatWest, culminating in a Relationship Management role in Private Banking, Craig joined prestigious private bank Coutts as an Associate Director.
At Coutts he spearheaded the management and development of a portfolio of ultra-high net worth clients with assets ranging from £1m-£25m.
“Coutts provided the best possible ‘higher level’ education in the intricacies of serving the needs and expectations of HNW clients”, Craig recalls. “Where clients tend to be at a mid to later life stage, have a more complex financial profile and often harbour ideas and wishes which are highly personalised and specific, it’s vital to treat each situation as a one-off. You need 360 degree awareness of the tools at your disposal, and the flexibility of approach to use these to your client’s best advantage in each situation. It’s this understanding that I’m pleased to be able to bring with me to the Harpenden.”
Working with our BDMS and the broker community.
Alongside his extensive banking experience, Craig has tangential experience relevant to mortgage lending. As a Director of a Kent based building company carrying our refurbishment and renovations, he and his partners are exposed at first hand exposure to the kind of situations in which, frequently, customers utilise their borrowings.
“I’d not set too much store by that,” Craig jokes. “My expertise is in understanding customers and providing them with peerless service. We have a first rate team of BDMs at the Harpenden, and I’m already enjoying working with them to ensure we deliver the best possible response and care to our brokers, so that they can deliver the best possible responses to their customers. It’s an exciting time at the Harpenden, and I’m delighted with the opportunity to help build on the Society’s excellent standing in the broker community.”
According to HBS’s Business Development Manager, Graeme Aitken, Craig’s lending and management experience brings invaluable new vison to HBS. “Craig is hugely experienced in client management and in business development. But his understanding of colleagues, partners and end borrowers, and his empathy for recognising and responding to the needs of each of these groups is already proving a huge asset as we drive HBS to the next level.”
