Why experience and assured handling matter with complex or regulated subjects

A field may be highly technical, so that indisciplined use of language could have serious consequences.

Equally, a business may operate in an area subject to strict regulation, compliance requirements and professional scrutiny.

I have decades of experience dealing with these kinds of complex subjects and situations. I’m able to work with deeply technical subject matter, or in critical and nuanced environments, and write clearly and accurately within their constraints.

Where this kind of experience is valuable

This ability comes into play with clients:

  • whose offer is specialist or technically involved

  • whose sector is regulated or highly scrutinised

  • for whom poor simplification could result in inaccuracy or reputational damage

  • whose internal expertise is difficult to translate into clear communication

  • whose previous writers or marketing people have been unable to grasp the issues satisfactorily

I consider that the skill lies in being able to explain clearly, without compromising either accuracy or compliance.

Call me now. I’m probably here at my desk writing.

Why experience matters

This kind of work depends heavily on judgement. In technical areas such as finance, financial services, fintech, IT, telecoms and biotech, I often find myself engaging with:

  • technical specialists

  • compliance or legal stakeholders

  • regulated terminology and frameworks

  • audiences with very different levels of understanding

None of these parameters can simply be bypassed. And none of these stakeholders wants to have their time wasted.

My job is to understand the issues, ask the right questions and instil confidence from the outset.

How I approach complex subject matter

I begin by looking at how the business thinks about its work.

Is the technical detail really part of its customer-facing story, or does the business just believe that it is?

Are there audiences for which technical detail is important, and others for which it is not?

Once I’m clear on this, I focus on:

  • how technical subjects need to be explained externally

  • what needs to be stated carefully or precisely

  • where detail matters, and where it does not

My goal is always communication that is confident, responsible and absolutely clear.
