If you have marketing
material that was written in a language ther than English,
it's simple to have it 'translated' into English.
If you choose a good
translator, your English version will faithfully 'transalte'
the meaning and sense of the original.
But what if
the meaning and sense of the original don't work for
your English-reading audience?
What if they
are culturally inppropriate, or irrelevant? What
if their tone of voice was good in its original language,
but is inappropriate in English?
It's not the fault of the translator:
it's simply that translation alone cannot ensure that
you say what you want to say to your English-reading
audience.
Translating the messaging into English.
I have found
that the best way to do this is in two parts.
If you supply the item in its original language,
I first have it translated into English by a good
translator, so that I have a version which accurately follows
the original.
Then, as an English
copywriter with lots of business experience, I can
work on it myself.
I read it
through in its entirety, and pick out those aspects
of the messaging that are just not appropriate for
the English-reading target market you're trying to
reach.
I will then revise
the entire piece to interpret the same broad message as the original
for your English readers.
The words will be different. The tone may be different.
But your message
will be delivered powerfully and
appropriately.
