The JANET Lightpath service provides researchers, students and academic staff with dedicated network capacity for end-to-end connections between two locations. The facility enables research projects to be carried out within a segregated network environment, undisturbed by other JANET traffic. Typically, these projects will be in areas such as physics, astronomy and high-end computing. Lightpath connections can be established between two JANET connected organisations, or between a JANET organisation and an organisation connected to an international partner organisation.
JANET Lightpath enables you to provide students and academic staff at your institution with a dedicated connection to another JANET connected institution, or an institution connected to a JANET international partner, for the purposes of experiment or research. The connection is free of interference from any normal JANET traffic. Lightpath provides capacity from 50Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s, implemented within JANET’s advanced optical network, and is delivered to the point where the institutions involved connect to the JANET IP service, or to an international peering point in the case of overseas collaborations.
Senior ManagementJANET Lightpath is an on-request dedicated network connection enabling students, researchers or staff at your institution to collaborate with colleagues at other JANET connected institutions, or at institutions connected to JANET’s international partners, on projects requiring a high-capacity network free from disturbance. Typically, Lightpath is made use of by scientists working in the areas of physics, astronomy and high-end computing. Lightpath makes a significant contribution to UK research by enabling national and international collaboration.
LibrariansJANET Lightpath is an on-request dedicated network connection enabling students, researchers or staff at your institution to collaborate with colleagues at other JANET connected institutions, or at institutions connected to JANET’s international partners, on projects requiring a high-capacity network free from disturbance. While Lightpath is most frequently used by scientists working in the areas of physics, astronomy and high-end computing, its segregated network environment, which enables high capacity file transfer, could be of value in providing access for specific and specialist projects to high quality multimedia resources and archives.
FinanceJANET Lightpath provides an on-request, dedicated network connection enabling students, researchers or staff at your institution to collaborate with colleagues at other JANET connected institutions, or at institutions connected to JANET’s international partners, on projects requiring a high-capacity network free from disturbance. By so doing, Lightpath encourages collaborative research while reducing costs associated with travel, accommodation and absence. Lightpath also allows saving of costs which might otherwise be incurred in duplicating costly facilities available via its network at another institutions. Lightpath is free at point of use for all but the highest connection capacities.
